Obedient Plant

Obedient Plant (Physostegia virginiana) got its common name because you can bend the individual flowers in any direction you like – a nice feature for floral displays. Unfortunately obedient plants are not so obedient in the garden, where some varieties can spread to the point of nuisance. However, obedient plant provides a nice splash of pale colors in the fall garden and growing obedient plant is easy.

Is There Such a Thing as Good Garden Design?

A garden designer once told me that good garden design was a lot like pornography: You can’t define it, but you know it when you see it. Certainly good garden design is subjective. My tastes seem to change daily, so my garden’s design is constantly evolving. I do favor a certain sense of order, but my plants usually have their own way, despite my best efforts.

I was at a garden talk recently and the speaker was a garden designer who specializes in naturalistic garden design. He feels that a successful garden design is one where you don’t even realize the space has been designed. I’m not sure that’s ever going to be my aesthetic. I like natural areas, but I love billowing boarders and flowering hedges. David Beaulieu has an interesting piece on the evolution of garden design, from geometric order to cottage gardens, sweeping lawns and minimalism. Do you think you’re garden aesthetic can be categorized, or do you find yourself constantly experimenting.

Controlling Weeds

Container Grown Peas

There never seems to be enough space in the vegetable garden. Thankfully breeders have begun to focus on varieties that have a more compact form – without sacrificing yield. In particular, there are a number of so called ‘patio varieties’ being introduced that make it possible to grow things in containers that are not traditionally thought of as container plants. Peas ‘n-a-Pot, from Burpee’s, stretches the concept of container vegetable gardening.

The Year of the Squash

This past weekend I wrote that the National Garden Bureau (NGB) had declared 2010 The Year of the Marigold. The NGB also picks a vegetable of the year and this year is The Year of the Squash. That’s a lot of vegetable, although we tend to only eat a few of them.

Squash is usually divided into summer and winter varieties. These are arbitrary distinctions and there’s a lot of overlap, so don’t pay the catagories too much attention. The big difference is that so called summer squash doesn’t store well and needs to be eaten shortly after harvest. Both types are grown in the summer, but winter squash can be stored and enjoyed well into the winter. Winter squash also tends to have a heavier, creamy consistancy that’s very satisfying during the cold winter months.

While you’re planning your vegetable garden, consider planting a few different types of squash. I know we don’t all have unlimited space in our vegetable gardens and squash vines can sprawl. However there are many new squash varieties that grow as semi-bush forms, allowing you to enjoy experimenting with squash without giving up your whole garden.
